Meeting Notice

Speaker: Michael Schagrin, Program Manager, Connected Vehicle Safety & Automation
ITS Joint Program Office, US Department of Transportation
Topic: "Vehicle Automation and Connectivity: The Future of Surface Transportation"
There is a confluence of activities leading to the recognition that someday cars may be partially automated or fully drive themselves. With Google, Continental, Bosch, Toyota, and others making serious investments in vehicle automation, the US Department of Transportation is interested in ensuring the traveling public is safeguarded against unnecessary danger with this evolving technology, while still trying to maximize societal benefits. For several years, the Department has been investing in connected vehicle technology (vehicles talking to other vehicles and with the infrastructure), focused in the near term towards crash imminent safety issues. Of particular note, is an upcoming decision by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on whether or not to regulate this technology for cars and trucks. While connected vehicles and vehicle automation are both maturing independently and rapidly, there is the ability to maximize the full potential of automation through a convergence of these capabilities. Mr. Schagrin will examine both connected vehicles and automation and their convergence towards creating a safer, more efficient, road transportation network.
