Clayton Lane, AICP, Deputy Executive Director, PhillyCarShare |
| Topic: |
"Car Sharing: A Solution for Major Cities?" Car sharing is rapidly gaining popularity in U.S. cities, with over 200,000 participants so far, including 50,000 in Philadelphia alone. Members report owning fewer cars, driving less, and riding transit more. Can car sharing noticeably impact our cities? What is the market potential for car sharing in the U.S.? How is car sharing already affecting development, urban livability, and sustainability? Mr. Lane will share how PhillyCarShare has grown from an all-volunteer project in 2002 into the world's largest regional car-sharing organization. He will cover how PhillyCarShare has tapped market forces to derive a social profit; and highlight how City government, SEPTA transit, the Parking Authority, and the regional Planning Commission are making it possible. Mr. Lane will also explore "what's next" and posit the transferability of Philadelphia's experience to New York and other major U.S. cities. |
