Jan. 23, 2008 Jim Kveradas from the Canadian National (CN) was asked to speak on the CN's purchase of the Elgin, Joliet, and Eastern Railway (EJ&E) and its impacts on Northeastern Illinois and the CREATE program on February 27 at the University of Illinois. The committee decided to look into a celebration of the Chicago Skyway turning 50 on April 8, 2008. It was decided that an invitation be extended to Chris Kopp from Cambridge Systematics to replace Leann Redden as a Programming Committee member. Harnish is the Executive Director of the Midwest High Speed Rail Association, which is advocating that people form a strong grassroots constituency for high speed rail that will provide a green, convenient, and economically viable alternative to air travel and its hassles. Dave Young, a former editor for the Chicago Tribune, condensed the history of Chicago’s transportation systems since the 1800s into a brief lecture for the group. Joe DiJohn closed the meeting by announcing the next TRF meeting will be in Boston in March. Mary Wells from the Illinois Tollway spoke about the impacts of a recent toll increase on their system. The new toll structure is designed to encourage greater use of its I-Pass payment program and to further stimulate off-peak use. Joe Schwieterman from DePaul University's Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development talked about his Institute's transportation activities. And Kazuya Kawamura described some of the research from his "Hedonic Analysis of Traffic Volume Impacts on Property Values."
