Student Scholarships

The Board of Directors of the Foundation has implemented a program of student assistance for those majoring in transportation with the intent of pursuing a career in the field. The program is open primarily to graduate students but is also available to undergraduates. It includes the Universities of Maryland, Missouri-St. Louis and North Dakota State University. The budgeted grants to these recipients total $2,750.

Library Support

The St. Louis Mercantile Library, holder of the TRF, Barriger and Potts collections, has recently taken up residency at the University of Missouri-St. Louis making it the major component of that Library system. In order to support the TRF collection and its possible expansion, the Foundation makes a modest yearly grant to the St. Louis Mercantile Library. Currently, the budgeted grant is $750.

TRF Student Paper Award

The TRF National Council has historically encouraged students in transportation to submit papers on an issue relevant to the transport field. Papers are reviewed and judged by a committee of TRF members. The best selected paper each year is then presented by the student at the Annual Meeting.

In 2004, the Foundation established an award for this winning student paper. The award defrays the student's costs for attending the annual meeting. The Foundation has budgeted up to $750 for this purpose.

Supporting Gifts

The Board of Directors of the TRF Foundation have pursued a consistent record of prudent management and growth of its endowment and its income. Its programs are designed to support and implement the goals of the national Transportation Research Forum. The TRF Foundation, as a 501C(3) not-for-profit entity under IRS rules, welcomes gifts to its endowment. The directors encourage such gifts. Increased income provides the means to expand programs essential to research and student development programs in passenger and freight transportation.

Special One-Time Projects Outside Endowment Process

The Foundation has been instrumental in finding worthy homes (whether in the US or other countries) for collections of books and research materials of TRF members, who have also contributed at least partly toward associated shipping expenses. These donations have been greatly appreciated by final recipient institutions, while providing tax benefits to donors. If interested in making such contributions, please contact Jack Ventura, President, TRF Foundation at (202)565-1548 or jack.ventura@verizon.net.
